In the 1940's, when the hot rod and custom scene was picking up speed in California, another West Coast venture was also gaining momentum: the movie industry. Cars and hot rods in movies were a novel idea in the 1940's, but by the 1950's, the age of the hot rod movie had arrives with a vengeance. With titles like The Cool Hot Rod, Hot Rod Girl, and Hot Rod Rumble, the movie rod was here to stay.
To supply the machinery for these new films, producers turned to the most obvious sources: California's premier rod and custom car builders. And few builders had a better reputation than Sam and George Barris of Barris Kustoms.
Barris TV & Movie Cars takes you backstage for Films and TV shows like Batman, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Flintstones, The Bugaloos, My Mother the Car, Mannix, The Munsters, and more. See how vehicles were chosen for their roles, what kind of customizing was necessary for each, and how it was done. Among the famous customs that were transformed for starring roles were Ala Kart, Shirley Barris' 1958 Thunderbird, the Chrisman Roadster, the Hirohata Mercury, Bob Metz 1950 Buick, and Villa Riviera. Most outrageous of all were the Barris Kustoms' movie and TV cars that were created completely from scratch including the Batmobile, Drag-u-la, Flintmobile, KITT, Mannix Roadster, SSXR, Thunder Charger, and Zebra Mustang. Barris also built stunt cars, process cars, and specialty vehicles. They're all here in Barris TV & Movie Cars.
A Lively behind the scenes text is accompanies by over 150 color and black and white archival studio photographs, movie and TV stills, and snapshots taken on location. Forget the "cars of the movie stars", these cars are the stars! 128 pages, Softcover.
