Although Eastern Airlines Inc was formed in 1934, a predecessor company, Eastern Air Transport Inc was incorporated on January 17th, 1930. Douglas DC-3’s with 1000hp Wright GR-18920-G2 engines began replacing all earlier aircraft in the fleet from December 1936. NC18124 was the 10th in the airline’s Great Silver Fleet, delivered on December 7th, 1937, only four years to the day before the infamous bombing of Pearl Harbor! Many of NC18124’s compatriots went off to war with the US Air Force and RAF, but this particular DC-3 remained with Eastern Airlines all of its working life. N18124, as it became in 1949, was withdrawn from service and donated to the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC on May 1st 1853 were it has been hanging from the ceiling on display ever since July 1st 1976! This beautiful and sturdy die cast 1:144 scale 1st Issue metal model from the Corgi Aviation Archive Collection has a wingspan of 7 3/4" and features rubber tires, interchangeable undercarriage, rotating propellers and high quality printed airline livery details.
